How to build a sustainable supply chain for your activewear brand?
Sustainability Requires Measurable Improvements, Not Just Claims
Building a more sustainable activewear supply chain requires measurable improvements across materials, manufacturing, packaging, logistics, and product claims. Every sustainability decision should be supported by current certificates, transaction documents, facility audits, and verified data—not assumptions or marketing language alone.
Materials: GRS & OEKO-TEX Are Starting Points, Not End Points
Global Recycled Standard (GRS): Verifies recycled materials and chain of custody. Brands should confirm that certificates are current, cover the relevant supplier and material, and support the intended recycled-content claim. GRS verifies recycled content—it does not automatically make the entire garment sustainable or cover other environmental impacts.
OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100: Confirms that tested textile components meet defined harmful-substance requirements. It should not be described simply as a certification for “non-toxic dyes”—it covers every tested component of the garment.
Manufacturing: Audit Tools That Go Deeper Than a Certificate
Manufacturing partners may be assessed through amfori BSCI, SMETA, Higg FEM, or Higg FSLM tools. These audits and assessments help identify environmental, labor, health, safety, and management risks. However, brands should also review corrective-action progress and ongoing performance rather than treating a single audit report as a permanent credential.
Packaging: Right-Size, Right-Claim
Improvements include reducing unnecessary components, right-sizing bags and cartons, using documented recycled content, and selecting properly authorized FSC-labelled paper. Avoid broad claims such as “100% eco-friendly” or “fully biodegradable” without clear supporting evidence and disposal conditions. Every packaging claim should be traceable to the specific material and its certification.
Logistics: Measure Before You Offset
Brands should measure energy, water, waste, transportation, and emissions before setting reduction targets. Sea freight, consolidated shipments, efficient carton loading, and fewer urgent air shipments may help reduce logistics impacts. Carbon credits should complement—not replace—direct emissions reductions. An offset is not a substitute for a measured reduction in the supply chain itself.
